Legend of Talaga Warna


Once upon a time stood a kingdom of Kutatanggeuhan that ruled by a wise king named Prabu Suarnalaya. Kutatanggeuhan was blessed with its prosperous land so people of Kutatanggeuhan really grateful they could eat by planting many kind of seeds in there. Under his ruling period all the country live happily and always at peace.

Despite the happiness and joy his people felt, the king was sad. Twenty years had passed since his mariage with his wife, yet both of them still not had a kid. Many people gave him the advices but none of them were worked. They gave up and told their king to adopted a child. Prabu Suarnalaya rejected that idea and went to mountain Gede to meditate. On his second day of meditating came an angel in front of him and suggested that Prabu Suarnalaya better be home because his fate has already been decided and he wouldn’t have a heir in his marriage. He refused to go home and stayed there.

On the second week, he almost giving up, until he heard a voice calling him and asked him if he really wanted to have a child. He said yes and promised would leave until someone granted his wish. The demon of the Ciburial’s water spring said that he would granted his wish and gave him a child made from the water spring he owned. But there was a condition, that he must not ever hurt or even yelled at his child no matter what the circumstance was, or else he would lose his child for eternity. The king made a promise to love his child and always made his child happy. The demon told him to go home and waited his child to be born from his wife’s womb.

A couple of months later, the queen was pregnant. This news bring happiness within the kingdom. Nine months later born a beautiful girl named Nyi Ajeng Gilang Rinukmi,  she often called Putri Ayu Kencana Ungu. Day by day the princess grew up spoiled by her parents. Everything she desired would be given. That made her become a naughty child since she was a little. Even the king was getting tired of her behaviour. The king and the queen didn’t dare scolding her because they afraid they would break their promise to the demon they made deal of.

On her seventeen birthday, princess Ayu Kencana, wanted to have a big celebration for her birthday. The king tried to get the best jewel for his daughter. On her birthday everyone from the country celebrated her, and she received a present from their parents. When she opened it, there was a necklace made from colorful stones that tied together. Princess Ayu Kencana pouted and stated that what she wanted was a necklace made from gold and diamond, not the one made from depraved stone she got, and threw it into her mother’s face. That was the last straw for the king to finally lost his patience. He yelled at her of how ungrateful child she was and ordered her to apologize to her mother.

Princess Ayu Kencana was startled because that was the first time she saw her father got so angry. Not long after that, the sky turned dark, the rain poured heavily. The water from the river began to rise up and drown the whole kingdom. Slowly, the princess’s body united with the water. Melting like an ice cube. The king tried to reach her daughter, but his effort was fruitless. Princess Ayu Kencana was gone. The whole kingdom disappeared drown by stream. The kingdom became a lake. The color of the lake always change, sometime it turned green, blue, yellow, or reddish. And legend had it that the change of color of the lake was caused by the colorful stone from the necklace princess Ayu Kencana owned.
